The origin of leathercraft merge into the mists of a distant past. A time when early man, having killed an animal for food, learned the benefits of "curing" hides in his primitive smokehuts, and to use the toughened leather for clothing, footware, shelter, etc.

Centuries later, tanning skills were acquired and the craft of leatherwork evolved as skills were handed down from generation to generation.

Sadly, in today's world of planned obsolescence, many fine leather products are becoming lost to their cheaper man-made replacements. Lost for all time to synthetics, relegating leathercraft to the hobbyist, the craft shop and a small number of saddlers.
